Client: Edgar
General Review
Edgar’s search is one of the most unusual that I have ever been part of. A native of Mexico his first job after college was with an American firm just beginning expansion into Latin America. His success was immediate and his rise in responsibility grew proportionately. This brought him to Indianapolis where the company is headquartered. As the expansion grew worldwide Edgar felt that he was by-passed in the confusion of such rapid growth. He struck out on his own purchasing equipment in the United States for a company in Mexico, but this was only temporary. Edgar was exceptionally good at preparing himself for the search. This, in a large part, was because of his knowledge of the value of a good marketing program. Now for some irony: I asked Edgar to prepare a list of people he knew. After we discussed each of these people and what station they held in life I made some recommendations as to who he should talk to first.
Edgar’s first informational interview was with a man he formerly worked for in the development of the Latin American expansion. This gentleman, years earlier, had developed a number of import, export and manufacturing firms in different countries and was extremely successful. Over lunch Edgar asked him for advice and direction, which he was happy to give. Finally, he asked Edgar, “what is your dream?” Edgar was able to describe exactly what he wanted. The gentleman’s response, “lets do it!” The irony is that most people when asked this question can’t answer it. Edgar is now involved in two companies involved in international trade with major ownership in both.
