The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits jumped last week, the latest indication of volatility in the nation’s job market. The Labor Department said Thursday, that Initial claims for jobless benefits, a measure of layoffs, rose by 14,000 to a seasonally adjusted 348,000 in the week ended Feb. 22 from the previous week’s downwardly revised figure of 334,000.
